Kyoto Celebration

Golden Pavilion

After our Tokyo adventures, Karen and I decided to visit the Kyoto area before returning back home. We first stopped at Kinkaku-ji (Temple of the Golden Pavilion). The area around the temple is really calm and green It also stills has a historic feeling to it and I can imagine several great portrait or movie ideas. However, the main attraction is the Golden Pavilion temple. Covered in gold-leaf and lacquer, the building is a great site to behold. I will however return in the spring because there will be some nice blossoms around, reflecting in the pond, which will make the shot much better. Oh and one thing about photography at most Kyoto temples and shrines is that there are no tripods or monopods allowed, which takes out most HDR shot ideas.

Our second part of the journey was the Inari Shrine. I already went once a few months before but I wanted to see how it was during a big holiday event such as New Years. I got more than I bargained for…

Thousands of people crowded to get into the entrance. The line went fairly quickly and we only had to wait for about 15 minutes or so. Since it was cold, I still didn’t get a chance to get people wearing kimonos at the shrine, just like last time. I did managed to get a few different shots due to the crowds of people, but I mostly got the same stuff as last time. But I did have a blast with such a great travel companion! It was also a fitting end to my vacation and the beginning of the New Year.
